Yes, in California you are not locked into your auto insurance policy but you may want to keep a few things in mind.
Most reputable carriers have your policy on a pro-rated bases, meaning you will get back premium for the time you were not insured if you have already made your payment.
Some carriers have what is called minimum earned premium. Meaning you can cancel at anytime but you will owe them the set amount you agreed to at the start of the policy.
Other auto insurance carriers charge a small fee for canceling early. Depending on the carrier you could be charged 5-15% of your remaining policy premium.
